CLEVELAND — 4:09 p.m.-Browns in first place in AFC North
The Cleveland Browns did something Sunday that they have not since December 22, 2002, and that is earn a regulation victory over the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
Behind a stout rushing performance from running back Nick Chubb, a breakout showing from tight end Ricky Seals-Jones and a career day from Jarvis Landry before he suffered a concussion, the Browns (2-2) earned a 40-25 victory over the Ravens (2-2).
It was the Browns’ first road win at Baltimore since October 11, 2015, which came in overtime, and it was a critical one, as the victory put Cleveland into first place in the AFC North Division after the first quarter of the 2019 regular season.
The Browns will look for their second consecutive victory when they travel across the country to play the San Francisco 49ers in a Monday Night Football game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on October 7.
On just 20 carries, Chubb rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns, including an 88-yard score in the fourth quarter that helped seal the victory.
Landry broke out of his season-long slump with eight catches for 167 yards in three quarters of action, while Seals-Jones had three receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown, a nine-yard score early in the first quarter.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 20 of his 30 attempts for 342 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
Defensively, the Browns sacked Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson four times and took away a pair of interceptions in the victory. Also, the Browns forced and recovered a fumble from Ravens running back Mark Ingram II in the third quarter.
3:43 p.m.-Seibert takes on a field goal
Rookie kicker Austin Seibert converted a 43-yard field goal attempt to give the Cleveland Browns a 33-18 lead over the Baltimore Ravens with 6:56 to play in the fourth quarter of their AFC North Division matchup at M&T Bank Stadium.
Seibert capped off a four-play drive that was set up by a fourth-down incompletion from Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
3:33 p.m.-Nick Chubb rushes for 88-yard TD
The Cleveland Browns had an answer for Lamar Jackson’s touchdown pass, and it came in the form of an 88-yard scoring run from second-year star Nick Chubb early in the fourth quarter of their AFC North Division game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
On first-and-15 from the Cleveland 12-yard line after a false start penalty against tight end Demetrius Harris, Chubb caught a pitch from quarterback Baker Mayfield, hustled through a hole created by the right side of the line and tight end Pharaoh Brown and raced 88 yards untouched for the touchdown.
Although the Browns failed to convert the two-point conversion, they held a 30-18 lead over the Ravens with 9:35 to play in regulation.
3:24 p.m.-Ravens make it one-score game on Jackson TD pass to Andrews
The Baltimore Ravens cut the Cleveland Browns’ lead down to one score early in the fourth quarter.
On third-and-goal from the Browns’ eight-yard line, quarterback Lamar Jackson surveyed the field and threw a pass to tight end Mark Andrews, who caught the ball against the back line of the end zone and got both feet down in bounds for the score.
Then, the Ravens got a two-point conversion run from Mark Ingram II that cut Cleveland’s lead to six points, 24-18, with 9:51 to play in the fourth quarter of their AFC North Division game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
On the scoring drive, the Ravens covered 75 yards in 14 plays and took more than six minutes off of the game clock.
3:09 p.m.-Browns extend lead on Nick Chubb TD run
The Cleveland Browns continue feeding the ball to running back Nick Chubb, and he continues to push the ball across the goal line.
Chubb capped off an eight-play, 84-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run behind left tackle Greg Robinson, which gave the Browns a 24-10 lead over the Baltimore Ravens with 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter of the AFC North Division game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
On the previous play, wide receiver Jarvis Landry caught a shovel pass from quarterback Baker Mayfield, ran around left end and gained 29 yards before being forced out of bounds at Baltimore’s two-yard line.
The Browns’ fourth scoring drive of the game against the Ravens was set up by a forced turnover.
With the Ravens driving deep in Cleveland territory, quarterback Lamar Jackson handed off to running back Mark Ingram II, and the veteran ball carrier was stripped by Jermaine Whitehead and recovered by defensive lineman Chad Thomas at the Browns’ 26-yard line.
2:49 p.m.-Browns go back in front on Nick Chubb TD run
When the Baltimore Ravens have scored, the Cleveland Browns have found a way to respond in their AFC North Division showdown at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
After Baltimore kicker Justin Tucker evened the score, Nick Chubb capped off the ensuing drive, which lasted only three plays, with a 14-yard touchdown run that started with him running right and cutting back all the way across the field, faking out several defenders along the way to the end zone.
Austin Seibert’s extra point gave the Browns a 17-10 lead with 9:41 to play in the third quarter.
Earlier in the drive, quarterback Baker Mayfield completed a short pass to tight end Ricky Seals-Jones, and the veteran pass catcher scampered down the field for a 59-yard gain.
2:43 p.m.-Ravens tie score on Tucker FG
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson moved the offense down the field and kicker Justin Tucker finished off the possession with a game-tying field goal against the Cleveland Browns at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
After the offense stalled at the Cleveland 23-yard line, Tucker converted a 41-yard field goal and drew the Ravens even with the Browns, 10-10, with 11:15 to play in the third quarter of the AFC North Division matchup.
The Browns gave up three chunk plays on the scoring drive, including an 18-yard pass from Jackson to rookie receiver Miles Boykin, a 17-yard scramble from the quarterback and a 19-yard rush from running back Mark Ingram.
2:21 p.m.-Browns take lead on late field goal
The Cleveland Browns responded in short order to the Baltimore Ravens’ game-tying touchdown drive.
Rookie kicker Austin Seibert capped off a 10-play possession when he converted a 24-yard field goal and gave the Browns a 10-7 lead over the Ravens with 11 seconds remaining in the first half of their AFC North Division matchup at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
The Browns took a 10-7 lead into halftime.
2:05 p.m.-Ravens draw even with Browns
The Cleveland Browns stymied the Baltimore Ravens’ offense for much of the first half, but on a short field after a Baker Mayfield interception, Lamar Jackson led the team down the field and across the goal line for the game-tying touchdown.
After drawing in the defense on a read-option fake handoff, Jackson fired a throw over the middle of the field and rookie wide receiver Miles Boykin made a diving catch in the end zone for the touchdown.
Justin Tucker’s point after attempt was good, and that drew the Ravens even with the Browns at 7-7 with 1:55 to play in the first half.
1:24 p.m.-Browns take early lead on Ravens
Getting the ball out of quarterback Baker Mayfield’s hands quicker, establishing the run with second-year standout Nick Chubb and taking advantage of the short and intermediate passing games were key focuses of the Cleveland Browns heading into their AFC North Division opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
On their second drive of the game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the Browns checked off all three of those on the list, and Mayfield capped off the 11-play, 99-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ricky Seals-Jones to finish a possession that took eight-and-a-half minutes off the clock.
With Austin Seibert’s extra point, the Browns took a 7-0 lead over the Ravens with 2:50 to play in the first quarter.
Mayfield was seven for eight with 87 yards and the touchdown to Seals-Jones on the drive, and had to overcome a first-and-25 after a blindside block from wide receiver Damion Ratley on a Nick Chubb run.
Following the penalty, Mayfield completed an 18-yard pass to tight end Pharaoh Brown, and then, a 19-yard swing throw to running back Dontrell Hilliard that turned a third-and-two from the Baltimore 35-yard line into a first-and-goal from the nine.
11:30 a.m.-Ward, Williams to miss second straight game
The Cleveland Browns got a little bit of good news on the injury front when safety Damarious Randall returned to practice earlier this week after missing two games with a concussion, but the secondary is still thin heading into today’s AFC North Division matchup against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
Starting cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams each will miss their second straight game with hamstring injuries suffered in the Friday morning practice ahead of the Sunday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams last week.
Ward and Williams were two of the Browns’ seven inactives for the Ravens game, joining safeties Sheldrick Redwine and Morgan Burnett, offensive tackle Kendall Lamm, wide receiver Rashard “Hollywood” Higgins and linebacker Genard Avery.
Avery is the only healthy scratch for the Browns today.
Although the secondary remains thin, the offensive line got back starting right tackle Chris Hubbard from a foot injury after he missed the Rams game and spent at least part of the week in a walking boot.
11:15 a.m.-Browns looking to get back in win column against Ravens
After a disappointing loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football last week, the Cleveland Browns are ready to get back into the win column, and they will face quite the challenge within the AFC North Division.
The Browns (1-2) will open their AFC North schedule with the defending division champions, the Baltimore Ravens, at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore in a rare early-Sunday afternoon start for Cleveland this season.
Despite their 1-2 record following the 20-13 loss to the Rams, the Browns find themselves just one game out of a first-place tie with the Ravens, who like Cleveland, is coming off of a loss, a 33-28 setback against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium last week.
“Big division game this week,” Browns coach Freddie Kitchens said after breaking down film of the Ravens. “Baltimore is playing really good football. Everything we do in this division goes through Baltimore. They are the defending champs of the division.
“We are looking forward to the challenge. It will be a physical game. They always try to create that. We want to form our identity to do the same thing.”
