CLEVELAND -- It's been 10 years since Eric Mangini spent his first offseason as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
And to commemorate the occasion, WKYC's Ben Axelrod and Bud Shaw discussed the circumstances that led to Mangini's hiring -- and the offseason that followed -- on the latest episode of the Triple Player Podcast.
"We get in there and we sit down and I can't remember if it was Michael Reghi or somebody said, 'Hey Randy, did you just see that the Jets fired Eric Mangini?'" Shaw recalled of an end-of-season press conference with then-Browns owner Randy Lerner.
"And Randy said, 'What?'" And he said, 'Yeah, they just fired Eric Mangini.' He goes, 'I'll be right back.' He gets up, leaves the room, goes in, talks to his secretary, comes back and sits down and starts talking about the process of looking for a head coach. About five minutes later, she comes out, taps him on the shoulder and hands him what everybody in the room knows is Mangini's number. The next night he interviewed him and within two weeks, Mangini was his head coach.
