CLEVELAND -- With a projected $110 million in cap space, the Cleveland Browns are expected to be major players in the free agent market this offseason. It now appears the Browns have keyed in on their first target, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting that cornerback Vontae Davis is on his way to Cleveland for a visit.
A Pro Bowl selection in 2014 and 2015, Davis spent the last six seasons as a member of the Indianapolis Colts. According to the NFL Network, Davis has also already visited with the Buffalo Bills, who like Cleveland, have a need for an effective veteran corner.
With more cap space than any other NFL team, the Browns are well equipped for any potential bidding wars they find themselves in this spring. Although both Jason McCourty and to a lesser extent, Jamar Taylor, enjoyed steady 2017 seasons, Cleveland isn't in a position to turn down any upgrades coming off an 0-16 campaign.
Originally drafted by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Illinois product spent three seasons in Miami before being traded to the Colts in 2012. In six seasons with Indianapolis, Davis served as the Colts' top cornerback and recorded 13 interceptions to go along with 229 tackles and 75 passes defended.
After making consecutive Pro Bowls in 2014 and 2015, Davis' production slowed as he battled injuries in each of the last two seasons. His 2017 campaign came to an end due to a groin injury, which required surgery, although he was recently medically cleared.
While it may be encouraging Davis -- who will turn 30 in May -- has agreed to a visit with Cleveland, it doesn't appear the Browns will get the last word with the 2-time Pro Bowl selection. According to Schefter in addition to Buffalo and Cleveland, Davis is expected to continue his free agency visits into next week.
