After Rex Ryan called him "overrated as hell," Baker Mayfield made it clear he wasn't putting much stock in what the former NFL head coach-turned-ESPN analyst had to say.
“It’s whatever,” Mayfield said on Wednesday. “In the wise words of Freddie Kitchens, ‘if you don’t wear orange and brown, you don’t matter.’ Rex Ryan doesn’t have any colors right now for a reason, so it’s OK."
Apparently, Ryan wanted to matter.
Taking the set for ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown show, the former head coach of the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills donned a brown suit with an orange tie -- a clear nod to Mayfield's comments about colors. Ryan's trolling of the Browns quarterback, however, didn't stop there, as he not only refused to back down from his assessment of Mayfield, but also stated that the Browns quarterback is lucky that Ryan isn't a member of the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff.
"I’m just basing things on fact, what I see," Ryan said per ESPN's Jake Trotter. "Baker Mayfield better be happy I’m not in the black and purple today on that sideline because he’d be in trouble."
Ryan isn't the only figure in football Mayfield has found himself feuding with this week. On Friday, the former Heisman Trophy winner replied to a comment on his Instagram page accusing him of behavior reminiscent of Antonio Brown by taking shots at the former NFL receiver's antics.
On Saturday, Brown fired back, tweeting that Mayfield hasn't "done [anything] in this league." He also called it a "scam" that Mayfield was selected ahead of Lamar Jackson in the 2018 NFL Draft -- the same quarterback Mayfield will be facing when the Browns take on the Ravens on Sunday.
