MAYFIELD, Ohio — Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield hosted the first day of his weekend football camp at Mayfield High School Saturday, and while there was a lot of one-on-one instruction from the coaches and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, there also were some fun non-football moments.
Near the end of the session, the song “Old Town Road” played over the loudspeaker, and with Mayfield leading the way, an impromptu dance party broke out with dozens of kids springing to their feet and moving with the music.
“I thought I retired from dancing, but I’ve been taped a few too many times to outlive that one,” Mayfield said.
That was not the only time dancing became a thing at Mayfield’s football camp.
During a question-and-answer session with the campers, Mayfield talked about being embarrassed when he gets sacked, winning the Davey O’Brien Award as the best quarterback in the nation while at Oklahoma, and then, responded to a challenge.
One camper asked Mayfield to recreate his dance from the Madden 19 video game, and the finalist for the 2018 NFL Rookie of the Year obliged.
“It’s really what it’s all about,” Mayfield said of interacting with the kids after day one of the camp. “I dreamt of playing professional football, and then, now I’m in a position where I can be a role model to these kids and for a lot more.
“Just stand up for the right things, stand as an example of, ‘If you want something, work for it.’ I just enjoy it. It’s a great position to be in.”
