CLEVELAND -- In the 2019 NFL Draft this past April, John Dorsey made a point to invest in his defense.
And while it may only be the preseason, the Cleveland Browns general manager's efforts appear to already be paying off.
Two drives after rookie linebacker Mack Wilson intercepted Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins for a pick-6, cornerback Greedy Williams got in on the takeaway action. With Washington at the Browns' 47-yard line, Williams intercepted Haskins, ending what would be the Redskins' final drive of the first half.
Williams' interception capped a first half for the Browns' second-round pick, which had initially gotten off to a sluggish start. Following a miscommunication with rookie safety Sheldrick Redwine, Williams appeared to be under the impression he was playing zone defense as Washington wide receiver Robert Davis rushed by him for a 46-yard touchdown pass from Case Keenum.
Williams, however, would bounce back to redeem himself with his interception, looking more like the player the Browns expected him to be when they selected him with the No. 46 pick in April's draft. A unanimous All-American at LSU, Williams tallied 33 tackles, 9 pass defenses and 2 interceptions in 2018.
Despite being projected by some as a top-five pick entering the draft season, Williams slid into the second round, where Dorsey and Cleveland traded up to select him in a deal with the Indianapolis Colts. Given the admittedly early returns, it appears the Browns may have gotten a steal.
