Youngstown football player's NFL Draft dream impacted by coronavirus

Draft Day is here, but it is very different this year for all the NFL hopefuls.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Since the stay-at-home order has been in effect, the list of canceled events continues to grow -- including the traditional format of the NFL Draft.

Shahaun Williams, a local football player who has dreamed of playing in the NFL since he was 7, says the coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot for him when it comes to being drafted.

“All I need is just an opportunity to show the team what I can do!”

But that opportunity will be quite different from the rest since he was unable to have a pro day because of the pandemic.

“Due to the coronavirus I’m probably going to go a third-day pickup -- which is late rounds -- or maybe right after the Draft as a free agent."

Instead of scouts coming to Notre Dame college, Williams had to upload drills online to showcase his talent.

“It’s no other feeling when you step on the field. It’s like nothing else matters.”

With the coronavirus (COVID-19) creating a need for isolation and self quarantining, this year's Draft will be held virtually, rather than in Las Vegas, where it had originally been scheduled to take place.

Instead of stressing about the uncontrollable events happening in today’s world, he practices patience.

“I mean everything happens for a reason. We just have to wait it out, stay safe and see what happens.”
