Ohioans could bet more than $82 million on the big game.

CLEVELAND — This is the first Super Bowl Ohioans can legally gamble on, so it’s expected to be a much bigger deal for many sports fans across the state.

But it will also be a big deal for local addiction help services.

“We’re definitely thinking we’re going to see more [callers] for this year,” said Nabil Pervaiz from Recovery Resources. “Specifically because of sports betting legalization.”

Pervaiz oversees prevention services at Recovery Resources, a Cuyahoga County-based addiction help service.

He says they help anyone dealing with addiction, from drugs and alcohol to gambling and sports betting.

Pause Before You Play, a new campaign in Ohio, aims to help Ohioans gamble safely.

The aim of the campaign is for prospective betters to take a pause before they place bets, and think about the risks, like developing a gambling addiction.

“We’ve already seen, just in the month of January, we’ve seen more callers than January 2022,” Pervaiz said.

Ohioans could bet more than $82 million on the big game, so if you do plan to bet, it’s best to know how to bet safely.

“Keep it as a social activity,” Pervaiz said. “Betting only what we can afford to lose, know when to quit, and know when to walk away.”

Pervaiz shared with 3News some signs to look out for if you worry yourself, or a loved one, might be developing a gambling addiction.

  • Lying about how much time you spend gambling.
  • Lying about how much money you’re spending.
  • Hyping up any win, no matter how small.
  • Downplaying any losses.

And if you think you or a loved one needs help, there are plenty of resources available.

Pervaiz said Recovery Resources can offer free problem gambling help, thanks to federal grants. Their website is www.recres.org.

The Ohio Problem Gambling Hotline is 1-800-589-9966, you can also text ‘4HOPE’ to 741741.
