Super Bowl LIII is on Sunday and millions of viewers will tune in to see who will walk away from the 2018 season as the NFL champion.
But for some "fans," the big show isn't the matchup between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, but rather what will happen when the two teams head to the locker room halfway through it.
Ever since Michael Jackson took the stage at the Rose Bowl 26 years ago, the Super Bowl halftime show has taken on a life of its own. In some ways, it's become a status symbol for artists -- a sign that you've reached the top of your profession in terms of both performance and fame.
On Sunday, Maroon 5 will serve as the show's headliner, with Travis Scott and Big Boi of Outkast also announced for the performance. But before we look ahead, let's take a look back at the top five halftime show performances in Super Bowl history (as decided by me).
5. Super Bowl XXXVIII (2004): Jessica Simpson, Janet Jackson, P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, Justin Timberlake
The Super Bowl Halftime Show heard 'round the world, everybody remembers Justin Janet's famous wardrobe malfunction. But even before Justin Timberlake -- intentionally or not -- ripped off that piece of leather, you would have been hard pressed to find a halftime show that did a better job of providing something for everyone.
There was peak Jessica Simpson. There was the legendary Janet. There was Diddy playing the hits. And there was "Hot in Herre" era Nelly, with Kid Rock. And then of course, there was the most famous moment in the history of the show.
An added bonus: this halftime show has aged into quite the Touch Tunes playlist.
4. Super Bowl XLI (2007): Prince
As it poured rain in Miami, Prince took the stage for a performance for the ages.
From "Let's Go Crazy" to "Proud Mary" to "Best of You" and of course, "Purple Rain," The Purple One played the hits and did so in both memorable and nostalgic-inducing fashion with the Florida A&M University Marching 100 Band joining him for the show.
Last year, the NFL Network did a look back at The Artist's Super Bowl show and the complications brought by the rain.
3. Super Bowl XLVII (2013): Beyonce, Destiny's Child
If there was a Super Bowl halftime show that epitomized what the performance should be, it could very well be Beyonce's at Super Bowl XLVII. Smack dab in the peak of her career, Queen B took the stage in New Orleans for a performance that not only featured her contemporary hits, but called back to her early stardom with "Crazy in Love" and a cameo from Destiny's Child.
2. Super Bowl XXVII (1993): Michael Jackson
While there were halftime shows for the first 26 Super Bowls, those largely consisted of marching bands and/or family-friendly acts. It wasn't until Michael Jackson took the stage at the Rose Bowl in 1993 that the Super Bowl Halftime Show became what it is known as today, with the pomp and circumstance of one of the biggest performances of the year.
Not only was The King of Pop's performance groundbreaking, but he rocked the Rose Bowl too. With a show featuring "Billie Jean," "Black or White" and "We Are the World," Jackson put on one of the most iconic performances of his storied career.
1. Super Bowl XXXV (2001): NSYNC, Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly
The holy grail of Super Bowl Halftime Shows. Aerosmith for the nostalgia. NSYNC and Britney Spears as the biggest pop stars on the planet. An up-and-comer and a set of the best pipes on the planet in peak Mary J. Blige.
If you were born around the time I was, there's no other option for the best Super Bowl Halftime Show Ever. This is the one. It's not even a discussion.
