Another gold medal Thursday for Team USA. This time, David Taylor bested his Iranian opponent to take the gold medal in men's 86kg freestyle wrestling.
Taylor faced off in the gold medal matchup against Iranian Hassan Yazdani. The two have been rivals for several years. Yazdani was winning the first portion of the match, but Taylor was ultimately able to mount a comeback, besting Yazdani 4-3 and securing the gold for Team USA.
Taylor, who is from outside of Dayton, Ohio, attended high school at St. Paris Graham and college at Penn State University. He was born on December 5, 1990.
In high school, Taylor was a four-time state champion in wrestling. He was an ASICS first-team All-American twice, and won the Dave Schultz Award for the top high school wrestler in the country.
His college career was no different. Taylor helped lead Penn State to four NCAA titles, and won the Hodge Trophy for college wrestler of the year twice. He was also a four-time Big Ten champion.
In 2016, Taylor came in third in the U.S. Olympic team trials.
