RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Spartans on parade! The city of Richmond Heights is honoring their basketball team with a parade Wednesday afternoon.
The Richmond Heights boys basketball team won their first ever state championship on March 20th in Dayton by defeating Tri-Village 50-29 to take the Division IV title.
According to the press release, "the parade will begin in the city's community park, located at 27285 Highland Rd. The parade will travel west on Highland until it reaches the school campus and then will terminate in the parking lot of the newly built Richmond Heights Upper School."
Mayor Kim Thomas, Superintendent Renee Willis and Principal Marnisha Brown will serve as The Grand Marshalls.
Dr. Willis, the district superintendent says "the excitement in the district and in this small community is bubbling over."
Students will also be part of the parade. The upper elementary kids will be wearing their best Spartan gear donning t-shirts with a "Baby Spartan" on them.
After the parade, festivities will continue on campus with DJ Food and Cleveland Cavaliers announcer Ahmaad Crump.
In that title game three weeks ago, the team played without West Virginia commit Josiah Harris due to injury.
However, Richmond Heights (25-4) got plenty of scoring from a well-balanced attack. Jaiden Cox-Holloway led the Spartans with 18 points along with five rebounds, while Detric Hearst Jr. added 10 points and seven boards.
Layne Sarver scored 13 for Tri-Village (26-4), but his team shot just 31.3% from the field and was out-rebounded 33-22. The Patriots, who previous won a state title back in 2015, never led once in the game.
Richmond Heights' victory capped off an incredible run in the OHSAA tournament. In seven games, the Spartans never won by less than 20 points.
