COLUMBUS, Ohio — Chagrin Falls is a village of roughly 4,000 people, and you can bet every last one of them is celebrating right now.

The Chagrin Falls High School girls soccer team took down Wyoming Friday afternoon in Columbus to win the Ohio High School Athletic Association's Division II state championship. Both teams were locked in a scoreless tie after 110 minutes of play, but the Tigers out-shot the Cowboys 4-2 in penalty kicks to take the title.

Each squad had nine shots on goal through regular and extra time, with Wyoming's Francesca Alberto leading the way with five and Chagrin Falls' Sarah Burgess not far behind with four. However, both goalkeepers — Sophie Crockett of the Cowboys and Peyton Gellin of the Tigers — saved all 18 attempts, including a combined nine in the two extra periods alone.

When the shootout began, Chagrin made all of its first three shots, while Wyoming missed two of its three to fall behind 3-1. Vanessa Rosander then made her try to keep the Cowboys alive, but Burgess drained it on the bottom left of the net to clinch the victory for the Tigers.

It's the second girls state soccer championship in Chagrin Falls history, with the first one coming all the way back in 1996. The Tigers finish the 2021 season with a record of 17-3-2, while the Cowboys wrap up at 16-4-3.
