COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Crew defeated CF Monterrey 2-1 Wednesday night at Lower.com Field in the first leg of the semifinals for the Concacaf Champions Cup.
The match remained scoreless until the 25th minute when forward Cucho Hernandez scored, giving the Crew a 1-0 lead. CF Monterrey struggled to answer until the 58th minute with a goal from Maximiliano Meza, tying the score 1-1.
The game-winning goal came in the 72nd minute from Crew forward Jacen Russell-Rowe.
The Crew will travel to Mexico for the second leg next Wednesday in hopes of advancing to the final. Before they head down south, they will face off against CF Montreal on Saturday at Lower.com Field.
Columbus is the only remaining MLS team in contention for the Concacaf Champions Cup.
The winner of the series will face either Club America or CF Pachuca in the final on June 2.
