Morgan's hat trick leads U.S. past Sweden

Alex Morgan netted her first hat trick for the U.S. women's national team on Wednesday in a 4-0 win over Sweden to capture third place at the 2012 Algarve Cup.

Parchal, Portugal (Sports Network) - Alex Morgan netted her first hat trick for the U.S. women's national team on Wednesday in a 4-0 win over Sweden to capture third place at the 2012 Algarve Cup.

The Americans were playing in the third-place match at the competition for the first time since 1998 following a 1-0 defeat to Japan on Monday.

But the team responded well with Morgan putting the U.S. in front after four minutes before she tallied her second goal of the contest in the 33rd courtesy of a pass from Tobin Heath.

Abby Wambach extended the lead to 3-0 in the 36th minute to put the U.S. in control, while Lauren Cheney played provider to help Morgan complete her hat trick midway through the second half.

The next match for the U.S. women will come on April 1 against Japan.
