Conor McGregor may not know what the future holds for himself after his UFC lightweight championship bout against Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, but he believes in what will happen on Saturday night.
After running through the UFC featherweight division, McGregor spilt a pair of welterweight bouts with Nate Diaz. Now, McGregor is taking on Alvarez in an effort to become the UFC’s first-ever simultaneous two-division champion.
“I’m going to wrap one on one shoulder and I’m going to wrap the other on the other shoulder, and they’re going to need a (freaking) army to come take them belts off me,” McGregor said in the UFC 205 press conference last month.
“They’re going to have to gather an army to try and take one of them off me, and that’s out straight. One’s going to be there. One’s going to be there, and I’m going to be picking and choosing who I want to destroy next, and that’s it.”
Should McGregor be successful in defeating Alvarez, he balked at the idea of a rematch.
“Let’s see what happens with Aldo,” McGregor said. “It’s hard to even think of Aldo. I KOed him in 13 seconds. I travelled around the world with him. He pulled out on two weeks’ notice. If Frankie (Edgar) was good enough and he had come through that last one, it would be me and Frankie for the featherweight belt here.
“He just wasn’t up to scratch, so I’m going to let that featherweight division play out and see how it goes. I’m the featherweight world champion. Now, in November, I’m going to be the lightweight world champion and I’m going to hold two of them consecutively.”
Instead of Aldo, McGregor left open the idea of testing the fight waters outside of the UFC.
“When I take that guy’s belt, I’m looking around,” McGregor said. “I don’t know what anyone else has for me right now. I might have to jump up and drag (expletive) Floyd Mayweather out back and see what he’s about.
“I feel by the time 2016 closes out, I’ll be closing in on $40 million. It’s a $40 million year for me. It’s been a damn good year.”
