CLEVELAND — During a weekend when the future of women's basketball will take the court in Cleveland, fans of the bygone WNBA franchise Cleveland Rockers will have an opportunity to celebrate the sport's past.
On April 6, the nonprofit SERVCOM is hosting The Reunion, an event that will bring former Cleveland Rockers and other WNBA legends together during the NCAA Women's Final Four, taking place blocks away at Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
Fans will be able to participate in a meet and greet with a range of former stars including Hall of Famer and Rockers draft pick Lynette Woodard, Janice Lawrence, Michelle Edwards, Tracy Henderson and Vicki Hall. Other non-Rockers stars will also be on hand, such as Hall of Famer and Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon, Sandy Brondello and Ohio native Katie Smith. In addition to the group already announced, over 45 additional WNBA players and coaches have been invited.
Attendees will receive a free commemorative t-shirt and "have the opportunity to share their memories with the players and coaches who were pioneers in this ground-breaking league," according to a news release. Photo opportunities and autographs will be available.
"Women’s basketball continues to grow, and the fans are an integral part of our success," SERVCOM said. "The women’s game allows for a greater connection between fans and players and we all understand the importance of these relationships."
The Cleveland Rockers, owned by then-Cavaliers owner Gordon Gund, were one of the WNBA's eight original franchises. The Rockers competed for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003 before Gund pulled out and the team was unable to find other local ownership.
The Reunion will be hosted at Anejo Tquila Joint at 1051 W. 10th St. on April 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by clicking here.
