In light of the Apollo 11 moon landing's 50th anniversary this weekend, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced on Friday their plans to introduce legislation aiming to rename NASA's Plum Brook Station in Sandusky after Neil Armstrong.

Senator Brown said that Armstrong's achievements are things that all Ohioans can be proud of.

“Neil Armstrong wrote a new chapter in human history, and in Ohio’s proud story of reaching for the heavens – a tradition the workers at NASA Glenn’s Plum Brook Station continue today,” Senator Brown said. “Neil embodied the best in our country – service, sacrifice, a sense of adventure and a passion for serving the common good."

Senator Portman said that Armstrong was a modest man and a big supporter of the work that's been done at the Sandusky station.

“Neil was first a humble and patriotic Ohioan who believed the honor of serving his country was a reward in and of itself. That’s why when I asked him the year before he passed away whether he wanted me to pursue naming Plum Brook after him, he demurred. But he was a strong supporter of Plum Brook Station and the important simulations and testing being done there."

Plum Brook is part of NASA's Glenn Research Center. It's home to facilities that conduct ground tests for the international aerospace community.
