Giant Eagle to discontinue use of plastic bags at Cuyahoga County stores starting Friday

Beginning on Earth Day, select Northeast Ohio locations will no longer provide the bags.

OHIO, USA — Giant Eagle is recommitting to reducing single-use bags at its stores throughout Northeast Ohio.

Beginning on Friday, April 22, which also happens to be Earth Day, Giant Eagle locations in Cuyahoga County will no longer provide plastic single-use bags to customers. Instead, the grocery story chain has announced incentives to encourage guests to use more environmentally friendly reusable bags.

"Giant Eagle recognizes its role in providing future generations with a healthy planet," the company said a press release for the announcement. " The company’s ambitious goal to eliminate single-use plastics throughout its operations is part of Giant Eagle’s larger strategic sustainability platform inclusive of achieving significant milestones related to waste, carbon emissions and sustainable products.

Coinciding with its removal of single-use plastic grocery bags from stores on April 22, the company is launching a reusable bag sweepstakes, providing guests who shop with a reusable bag multiple opportunities every month to win $10,000.

Additionally, all Giant Eagle supermarkets will have high quality reusable bags available for purchase starting at $0.99 each. On Earth Day, Giant Eagle is prepared to giveaway 100,000 reusable bags for free at its Cuyahoga County supermarket registers.

In addition to the removal of single-use plastic bags from stores, Giant Eagle is also introducing a 10-cent per paper bag fee to further encourage the use of reusable bags.
