Girls in STEM: Microsoft stores open their doors to Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts in Northeast Ohio can earn STEM related badges at the Microsoft Store at Beachwood Place.

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — What better way to learn about STEM, science, technology, engineering and math, than inside a Microsoft store.

Microsoft has teamed up with the Girl Scouts to offer girls, Daisies to Cadettes, the skills to earn badges in robotics, computer expertise, digital photography and movie making.

Scout Leader Michelle Highsmith of Wadsworth Troop 90396 couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Her troop was the first to try Microsoft’s new program. They got to program a robot.

“I think that this is an unbelievable opportunity for the girls. If you look at the fields they are underrepresented and by introducing the possibilities out there for future career opportunities at a very young age, it gets the girls interested. Some of them may have not known anything about coding today, and hopefully they walk away with a new appreciation or even spark an interest to something in the field later on,” said Highsmith.

“It's always fun seeing their faces light up when they see for example today, Obot move and talk to them and interact with them the way they're telling it to, so it’s super fun. Our staff gets ignited over it,” said Natalie Holbrook, Microsoft’s Community Development Specialist.
