Mother killed, one-year-old baby seriously injured after accident involving drunk driver

The two-vehicle crash occurred on West Ridge Road near the intersection of Dellefield Road.

ELYRIA, Ohio — An accident in Elyria Township early Tuesday morning has left one person dead and others injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

At 1:02 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29, the Elyria Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the call of a two-vehicle crash on West Ridge Road near the intersection of Dellefield Road in Elyria Township. Authorities said that troopers found two passenger vehicles off the east side of West Ridge Road upon arrival to the scene.

After further investigation, authorities determined that a 2011 Ford Focus operated by Kaylie Eskins, 30, had stopped at the intersection of Dellefield Road and West Ridge Road before making a right turn traveling northbound on West Ridge Road.

The second car, a 2008 Audi S5 operated by Logan Townsley, 22, was headed northbound on West Ridge Road when authorities said his vehicle struck the read of Eskins’ vehicle, which then caused both vehicles to travel off the east side of West Ridge Road. Both vehicles had one passenger inside, as Eskins was traveling with her one-year-old son, John Eskins, and Townsley was with 28-year-old Sullivan Townsley, according to authorities.

The crash resulted in Kaylie Eskins being pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Her son, John, was transported by Life Care EMS to Lorain Mercy, then was Life Flighted to Rainbow babies University Hospital in Cleveland with serious injuries, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Logan Townsley was transported via Life Care EMS to University Hospital in Elyria with minor injuries, while Sullivan Townsley was transported there with serious injuries. All occupants were utilizing seat belts and child safety seats.

Logan Townsley was interviewed by the Ohio State Highway Patrol while at University Hospital in Elyria where it was found he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He was then incarcerated at the Lorain County Jail on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol as well as reckless operation. Authorities say that additional criminal charges are pending.

The accident remains under investigation.
