BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — If you drive regularly on Lake Road in Bay Village, you'll notice some changes starting Monday.

In an effort to protect the city's pedestrians, Bay Village has installed two new "high visibility" crosswalks on Lake Road. You'll see one on Lake Road just west of Cahoon Road, plus one on Lake Road at Columbia Road.

According to Bay Village Police, the crosswalks utilize high visibility markings, a dedicated concrete island, and signage/flashers on both sides of the street. Once activated, the flashing lights on these signs will continue for several seconds alerting drivers to the presence of a pedestrian in the roadway.

Pedestrians have the right of way once they are in the roadway. However, police emphasize that pedestrians should never assume a vehicle will stop.

The new flashing signs are not "stop" signs and should NOT be solely relied upon to ensure pedestrian safety. Pedestrians should use common sense and should not assume any vehicle has seen them until eye contact is made with the vehicle operator.

Bay Village Police plan to closely monitor the crosswalks for violators and will cite accordingly.
