BRATENAHL, Ohio — A driver going more than 100 miles per hour on I-90 near the village of Bratenahl is potentially facing more than six months in jail and a hefty fine.
The citation comes less than a week after the state dedicated that stretch of road as a “safety corridor”.
Police told 3News that since COVID they have seen dangerous uptick of people speeding along I-90 and not wearing their seatbelts.
Bratenahl police said Sunday’s high-speed citation is just one of the many reasons they are looking to create a stronger presence along the interstate.
“We’re regular seeing people 90, 95, 100, miles per hour almost every day,” said Timothy O'Haire, a sergeant with the Bratenahl Police Department.
O'Haire said reckless driving on Interstate 90 has become a major problem.
And this past Sunday the issue was evident when the sergeant pulled over a driver for going 113 miles per hour, nearly double the speed limit.
O'Haire said the police department is using every tool at its disposal to catch drivers who are breaking the law
“The state puts a lot of money into it, we will assign troopers to the corridor," O'Haire said. "And part of their initiative is they are going to be bringing out their aircraft and then doing speed enforcement with their aircraft as well."
The corridor stretches from East 55th Street to East 260th Street.
According to the state, since 2021 a total of 413 crashes have occurred within the corridor — all involving excessive speed.
