Multiple crashes cause traffic problems in Cleveland area amid icy roads due to lake effect snow: Updates from the morning mess

CLEVELAND — It was a tough morning commute for drivers in the Cleveland area with multiple crashes and road closures amid slippery conditions due to early morning lake effect snow.

Cleveland police sent out an alert shortly before 7 a.m. asking all drivers to avoid I-90 “due to icy roads” and accidents.

“The safety of our community members is paramount, and we urge everyone to exercise caution and find alternate routes to their destinations,” according to police.

9:58 a.m. Cleveland police say I-90 East is now open.

9:40 a.m. Drivers can expect a 12-minute delay on I-90 East between mile markers 167 and 170. This area has experienced some of the heaviest congestion throughout the morning where delays were previously reported around 40 minutes.

9:17 a.m. While delays appear to be easing in spots, we're still seeing slow traffic throughout the area:

8:17 a.m. Drivers are still seeing delays across I-90.

8:10 a.m. Here's an updated look at ODOT's traffic map, which shows a variety of incidents and delays throughout the area:

7:59 a.m. Delays on I-90 East have grown to 35 minutes for drivers between mile markers 164 and 170. Meanwhile, drivers on I-77 North are now seeing delays around 40 minutes between mile markers 154 and 160.

7:48 a.m. ODOT reports that all lanes of I-90 West are currently closed near I-77 due to a crash. This comes after I-90 East was closed near E. 9th Street earlier in the morning.

7:37 a.m. There's a 35-minute delay for drivers on I-77 North between mile markers 155 and 160, according to ODOT's traffic map.

In Shaker Heights, police say a school bus was involved in an accident at the intersection of Warrensville Center and Farnsleigh. There were students on board, but no additional details were immediately available.

7:33 a.m. ODOT's traffic map shows I-90 East is very slow with drivers experiencing a 25-minute delay between mile markers 165 and 170. Drivers on I-71 North have a 24-minute delay between mile markers 247 and 248.
