Crash closes portion of I-71 in Ashland County for two hours

One person suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident

ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio — Troopers of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a crash involving a semi truck that closed I-71 southbound for two hours on Friday. 

According to reports, a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 21-year-old Emma Blair of Blacklick, Ohio, was heading southbound on I-71 around 11:45 a.m., when it lost control, went off the left side of the roadway and struck the median cable barrier.  

The car then came back onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 71 where it was struck by a 2019 Freightliner Semi Truck, driven by 55-year-old Richard Mitchell of North Fairfield, Ohio.

Blair was transported to Mansfield Med Central Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in the Santa Fe was taken to Mansfield Med Center Hospital with serious injuries.

Mitchell was transported to Ashland Samaritan Hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers say all three people involved in the crash were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.  The accident is still currently under investigation.
