Average gas prices hover near $3.60 in Northeast Ohio as GasBuddy says 'we may have seen the peak in the national average already occur'

'It's certainly looking optimistic for motorists.'

AKRON, Ohio — Gas prices have remained steady across Northeast Ohio since last week as GasBuddy reports Cleveland drivers are paying 0.4 cents less per gallon, while Akron drivers are paying 1.2 cents more.

The new data, which was released early Monday, shows the average price in both Akron and Cleveland is now listed at $3.59 per gallon.

For some added context, that puts Cleveland’s gas prices 40.9 cents more expensive than one month ago, but 22.9 cents cheaper than a year ago.

Gas prices didn’t move much nationally, either, with prices falling 0.8 cents per gallon in the last week. That puts the country’s updated average price at $3.64 per gallon, which is up 22.8 cents from a month ago and 46.4 cents lower than a year ago.

"For the first time in several weeks, the national average price of gasoline has seen a decline, and while the fall was quite small, the bigger news may be that we may have seen a short-term peak for the price of gasoline,” explains Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “While any unexpected outages could push it up again, there is a rising possibility that barring such, we may have seen our high water mark for the national average for the summer. Typically, gas prices peak between May and June, and with the oil market showing significant cracks in strength, we may have seen the peak in the national average already occur, a few weeks earlier than average. While it's possible we could go higher later this summer should a major hurricane target sensitive infrastructure, it appears the odds that the national average will miss the $4 per gallon mark are rising. It's certainly looking optimistic for motorists."
