2 dead after incident on I-77 in Newburgh Heights; police say car was fleeing a traffic stop

The incident began around 12:20 p.m. on Saturday

NEWBURGH HEIGHTS, Ohio — Two teens are dead after a car fled during a traffic stop, causing a fiery crash on I-77 North Saturday afternoon in Newburgh Heights.

According to Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Ray Santiago, officials were called out around 12:20 p.m. to investigate a "serious injury crash" on I-77 near Fleet Avenue. Officials with OSHP say that the crash involved a 2004 Ford Explorer and resulted in two fatalities.

Newburgh Heights dispatchers told 3News at the time that drivers were being directed to exit at Harvard Avenue.

Both victims of were 17 years old.
