NORTH KINGSVILLE, Ohio — Heads up!
Drivers in Ashtabula County could encounter an unexpected detour as the Ohio Department of Transportation announced an “emergency closure” of state Route 531 between La Bounty Road and Route 193 in North Kingsville.
ODOT announced the closure Thursday morning citing an “erosion issue.”
“ODOT has been actively monitoring this area over the past decade as Lake Erie has continued encroaching on SR 531, posing a safety issue for the traveling public,” according to a press release.
As a result of the closure, drivers are being detoured using Route 193 to US 20 to Route 11.
“We know this is an inconvenience to those who travel this route, but we will never sacrifice safety for convenience,” ODOT District 4 Deputy Director Gery Noirot said.
Around 3,000 vehicles use this portion of Route 531 each day, according to ODOT officials.
“ODOT will work diligently with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard, Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to design a solution and secure all permits,” their press release declared.
