CLEVELAND — As freezing rain is expected throughout Northeast Ohio with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from Tuesday from 12 a.m. to 12 p.m., ODOT is already preparing to battle the icy conditions.
Brent Kovacs, the Public Information Officer for ODOT District 12 (Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga counties), tells 3News they will have 70 trucks salting the roads staring Monday night.
If the precipitation starts as rain, Kovacs said their team will begin
Kovacs said if the precipitation starts as freezing rain that "residual salt on the roads from this past storm will act as pre-treating," while noting that crews will be using rock salt from the beginning to the end of this wintry weather.
Kovacs also wanted to remind drivers to slow down while allowing plenty of extra time -- and don’t forget to leave room around the snow plows.
So what can you expect from the conditions?
“Problem is, we’ve got frozen surfaces so when that rain hits it freezes immediately," explains 3News Senior Meteorologist Matt Wintz. "And we’re dealing with some slick travel for untreated surfaces. Salt will work on this, so that’s good news. But as we go throughout that morning rush hour we could have some slick spots, maybe a glaze on some surfaces.”
