Willoughby woman dies in wrong-way crash on Ohio Turnpike

Authorities say a 2015 Toyota RAV4 was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes when it crashed head-on with a semi.

LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio — A 78-year-old woman from Willoughby has died following a wrong-way crash on the Ohio Turnpike, which happened Thursday evening near mile post 142 in Amherst Township.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it was shortly before 9 p.m. when a 2015 Toyota RAV4 was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes and struck a tractor-trailer head on in the middle lanes.

The driver of the Toyota, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was identified as Rita Robinson Whitman. Authorities say It is unknown at this time what caused her to be driving the wrong way.

The driver of the semi, a 33-year-old woman of McComb, Ohio, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
