4 killed in 3 separate crashes on Ohio Turnpike early Thursday morning: Here’s a timeline of what happened

The three crashes all happened within one hour of each other.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Four people have died as a result of three separate crashes that took place along the Ohio Turnpike in Northwest Ohio early Thursday morning.

As a result, the Ohio Turnpike was closed in both directions for several hours between Route 108 and Route 2.

TIMELINE OF THE 3 SEPARATE CRASHES

Here are details as provided by the Ohio State Highway Patrol:

First crash: 5:34 a.m. – One dead

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says this crash involved four commercial vehicles and one passenger vehicle on the Turnpike near milepost 48 in Swanton Township (Lucas County).

One person was killed in this crash with three others taken to Toledo-area hospitals with unknown injuries.

Second crash: 5:59 a.m. – Two dead

This crash took place on the Turnpike near milepost 49 in Fulton Township (Fulton County). Two commercial vehicles – one of which was hauling sulfuric acid – were involved in the crash along with one passenger vehicle.

The Highway Patrol says the Toledo Fire Department established a 150-foot perimeter around the scene as a precaution.

Two were confirmed dead in this crash with multiple other injuries reported.

Third crash: 6:24 a.m. – One dead

This incident involved two commercial vehicles and three passenger vehicles on the Turnpike near milepost 50.8 in Swanton Township (Lucas County).

One person was killed with multiple other injuries reported.

Ferzan M. Ahmed, executive director the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, issued the following statement regarding the incidents: 

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. We wish a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries. 

“We also commend the Ohio State Highway Patrol, first responders, law enforcement agencies, local safety/medical agencies, and staff from the Ohio Turnpike for their professionalism and rescue efforts at multiple crash locations.”
