According to troopers, 23-year-old Karysha Melendez of Lorain was driving westbound on the Turnpike when her vehicle, a 2016 Honda, struck the concrete median barrier. Her vehicle proceeded to drive off the right side of the road and became disabled in a ditch. Melendez then exited her vehicle and walked into the westbound lanes and was struck by a 2015 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer, driven by 50-year-old Daniel Moyer of Janesville, Wisconsin.

Melendez suffered fatal injuries that came as a result of being hit by the semi tractor-trailer. Moyer, who was wearing his safety belt, was not injured. It has not been determined if drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.

As a result of the incident, the westbound lanes of the Turnpike closed for approximately one hour. One lane was reopened until the incident was cleared several hours later.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information pertaining to it is asked to contact Milan Post.
