CLEVELAND — A 22-year-old woman has died after a multi-vehicle crash happened Wednesday afternoon on I-90 East near West 25th Street in Cleveland.
Police said it was around 2:02 p.m. when a 2013 Bentley Continental was traveling "at a high rate of speed" when the vehicle's right front corner collided with the rear of a 2019 Jeep Wrangler.
"The force of the impact caused the Jeep to roll over, ejecting a 22-year-old female passenger of the Jeep on to the road," according to new details released by the Cleveland Police Department on Thursday morning.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Samantha Nelson of Cleveland.
Police said the Jeep slid on its roof and struck the median wall before coming to rest.
The woman was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where she later died around 10 p.m.
The 58-year-old man who was driving the Bentley was also taken to MetroHealth Medical Center "with multiple injuries."
As for the driver of the Jeep, Cleveland police say the man fled the scene on foot.
Earlier, the Ohio Department of Transportation confirmed that all lanes had been blocked, with photos from the scene showing emergency crews directing traffic off the highway onto West 25th. At least one vehicle had also completely overturned.
At one point, traffic was backed about three miles all the way towards West Boulevard. Drivers were told to expect delays of roughly an hour.
Prior to the accident, the Ohio Department of Transportation captured the 2013 Bentley on video allegedly racing with a red Honda Civic on I-90 East. Cleveland Police say that both vehicles were driving “well in excess” of the 60 MPH speed limit. The red Honda Civic made no contact with the vehicles in the crash and did not remain on scene.
Cleveland police investigators are asking the driver of the red Honda Civic to contact the Cleveland Police Accident Investigation Unit. Additionally, anyone with information on the red Honda Civic is being asked to call 216-623-5290.
