CLEVELAND — The USA Triathlon is expected to bring about 5,000 athletes to Cleveland this weekend.
It's also expected to create road closures that will impact both the east and west sides of the city.
Saturday features an Olympic-distance triathlon, for which competing athletes had to qualify. The race includes a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run. Top finishers in each age group can qualify for the World Championships in Switzerland this year and in Canada next year.
Sunday's sprint triathlon is open to public competitors. That race features a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer run.
Edgewater Beach hosts the swim portion of both races, while the running and biking routes will impact the Shoreway and its surrounding areas. That means visitors should expect heavier traffic than usual into Edgewater Park.
