Spirit Airlines leaving Akron-Canton Airport

Spirit Airlines had been on a 'temporary hiatus' since June at CAK and had planned to restart flights next month.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio — Travelers flying out of Akron-Canton Airport will have one less airline option to choose from.

Spirit Airlines, which had announced a "temporary hiatus" at CAK back in April, informed airport leaders on Wednesday that it will not be resuming service.

The hiatus took effect in June, but Spirit Airlines told 3News at the time that they had planned to restart flights at the airport in November.

"Yesterday (Wednesday) we were informed by Spirit Airlines that despite good performance at Akron-Canton Airport they will not be relaunching service to Orlando (MCO) due to the continuous constrains on their network," said Lisa Dalpiaz, Akron-Canton Airport Vice President of Marketing and Air Service Development in an email to 3News. "Spirit has not been operating from CAK since June 2022. Although we hate to lose any airline service, we do not anticipate a significant impact from this announcement as customers have many other exceptional vacation destination options from CAK."

Among those options, according to Dalpiaz, is a new Allegiant Air route from CAK to Orlando/Sanford that just launched last week.

"Customers looking for great fares, exceptional service, and easy connections can also fly American, Breeze, or United from CAK to Orlando." Dalpiaz added.

The announcement comes amid a proposed purchase of Spirit Airlines by JetBlue Airways for $3.8 billion. JetBlue and Spirit would become the fifth-largest U.S. carrier, with about 9% of the market. The Justice Department is currently reviewing the deal.

Meanwhile, Spirit continues to offer service at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and has recently added new non-stop routes for airports in Norfolk, Charlotte, and Austin.
