CLEVELAND — As wickedly bitter winds whip the Lake Erie coastline, the choppy waters could see 10+ foot waves in spots.
The National Weather Service has issued a Gale Warning across the entire lake through Thursday.
“Strong winds will cause hazardous waves which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility. Below normal water levels will result in hazardous navigating conditions.”
Mariners are urged to take caution as winds could reach 30-40 knots and gusts up to 45 knots.
“Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure the vessel for severe conditions.”
We streamed live footage of the crashing waves, which you can watch below:
It comes as strong winds and frigid temperatures swirl through Northeast Ohio.
A Lake Effect Snow Warning is also in effect for Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties until 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29. Several inches of snow could accumulate where the lake effect bands persist.
