As hurricane season nears, New Orleans worries over flooding

New Orleans is warily preparing for hurricane season and eyeing a storm system developing in the Gulf.

NEW ORLEANS — Problems with the city's drainage system came to light last summer when a powerful storm dropped more than 9 inches (22 centimeters) of rain in some areas.

In some neighborhoods, businesses flooded and cars were submerged.

Interim operations manager Joe Sensebe of the Sewerage and Water Board says the city's drainage system is "definitely better off," than last summer with more power and pumping capacity.

But officials warn that the system can't prevent all flooding, especially from intense rains or slow-moving hurricanes.

It's stressful for businesses like Lauren Morris's dental office that flooded last August. With hurricane season nearing, she's worried flooding might close her office for days or weeks.
