Vice President Kamala Harris will visit western North Carolina on Saturday to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, the White House said Friday.

Harris is expected to land in Charlotte on Saturday afternoon.

While in North Carolina, Harris will be briefed about the ongoing recovery efforts across the region following Helene's devastation. Harris is expected to give an update on federal action being taken to support emergency response in North Carolina communities impacted by Helene, as well as other states in the Southeast.

Harris was in Georgia Wednesday, where she toured storm damage caused by Helene. Her Georgia visit came the same day that President Joe Biden had an aerial tour of the Asheville with Gov. Roy Cooper. Biden also visited with Cooper at the state's emergency headquarters in Raleigh.

Cooper will join Harris for the visit in North Carolina on Saturday, according to his office.

Many highways in the hardest-hit parts of North Carolina remained inaccessible, but from his Marine One helicopter, Biden saw flooded roads, piles of shredded lumber and displaced sandbags, emergency trucks and downed powerlines. In one area, homes were partly under water, and it was hard to distinguish between lake and land. Nearly 200 miles to the south, Harris was in Augusta, where she sat for a briefing and thanked assembled officials for helping “meet the needs of people who must be seen and must be heard.”
