Cooling centers available in Akron, Cleveland, Elyria on Friday as heat wave comes to Northeast Ohio

Highs look to be in the low-90s with heat index values near 100°.

AKRON, Ohio — As Northeast Ohio braces for potentially the hottest day of the year on Friday, several communities are preparing facilities to help people beat the heat.

In Elyria, a cooling station will be opened at the Thomas O. Shores South Recreation Center at 101 South Park Drive from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. 

Meanwhile, the city of Akron has announced that there will be extended hours at four cooling centers in the city.

“We are extending hours at four locations to ensure residents of all ages can escape the heat, even in the evening,” said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. “We also encourage all our residents to check in on their neighbors and family members who may be vulnerable to these high temperatures and take steps to keep children and pets well hydrated, rested, and out of the sun.”

Cooling centers will be open at the following locations from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, July 28. 

Lawton Street Community Center

Mayor Horrigan says that all other community centers will be open to the public during their normal business hours and will be providing water for anyone in need. A full list of locations can be found HERE.

In Cleveland, recreation centers are open for residents to relax and cool off. 

The following are open from 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m.

  • Collinwood Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center - 16300 Lakeshore Blvd.
  • Halloran Skating Rink - 3550 W. 117th
  • Kovacic Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center - 6250 St. Clair Ave.. 
  • Michael Zone Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center - 6301 Lorain Ave.
  • Sterling Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center - 1380 E. 32nd Street
  • Frederick Douglass Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center - 15401 Miles Ave.
  • Glenville Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center - 680 E. 113th
  • Hamilton Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center - 13200 Kinsman Ave.
  • Stella Walsh Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Center - 7345 Broadway Ave.

The 3News Weather Team says to look for seasonably warm temperatures in the mid 80s on Thursday. Friday could be the hottest day of 2023 *so far*. Highs look to be in the low-90s with heat index values near 100°.
