National Weather Service confirms September 24 tornado in Lorain County: What we know

LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio — The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Lorain County on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when severe weather passed through Northeast Ohio.  

According to the NWS, at approximately 8:04 p.m., an EF-0 tornado was confirmed to have formed and touched down in Kipton. The peak wind speed of the tornado was estimated to be 75 mph, and it was 0.25 miles long. 

The NWS said the tornado started west of Gore Orphanage Road. It ripped off part of the metal siding and a roof, and blew debris across the road. Metal debris was twisted and blown on a structure`s west side, scattering metal siding northeast onto a field. 

The NWS noted that there were no injuries in the tornado. 

The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:

  • EF0...Weak......65 to 85 mph
  • EF1...Weak......86 to 110 mph
  • EF2...Strong....111 to 135 mph
  • EF3...Strong....136 to 165 mph
  • EF4...Violent...166 to 200 mph
  • EF5...Violent...>200 mph

The National Weather Service noted this was the 72nd tornado to touch down across Ohio this year.
