NWS issues Lake Effect Snow Warning, Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Northeast Ohio

The NWS said snow could fall at a rate of 1-2 inches per hour in some areas, leading to poor visibility as low as a quarter of a mile.

CLEVELAND — The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for several Northeast Ohio counties as wintry conditions are set to grip the region in the coming days.

The Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula Counties from midnight Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday. During that same time span, the NWS issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Cuyahoga County.

The NWS says heavy lake effect snow bands are expected to bring a total of 6-18" of new snow where they persist. It also said snow could fall at a rate of 1-2 inches per hour, leading to poor visibility as low as a quarter of a mile. This would make travel difficult to impossible, the NWS said.

The poor travel conditions would impact parts of Interstate 90, I-79, and I-86 in Northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania, the weather service said.

"Heavy snow and blowing snow will lead to very difficult travel in lake effect bands, especially tonight through Friday night."

3News Meteorologist Anthony Copeland predicts some areas in Northeast Ohio like Lake and Ashtabula Counties could see as much as 1-2 feet of snow by the end of the weekend. Snowy winter conditions are expected to last through the next seven days.
