CLEVELAND — The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for several counties in Northeast Ohio as freezing rain is expected to impact the region Sunday morning.

The NWS issued the advisory Saturday afternoon. It will be in effect from 4 a.m. to noon Sunday in the following counties:

  • Ashtabula
  • Cuyahoga
  • Geauga
  • Lake
  • Medina
  • Mahoning
  • Portage
  • Summit
  • Stark
  • Trumbull
  • Wayne

The NWS said a band of precipitation will approach from the southwest before dawn Sunday morning, starting as a brief period of snow before changing to rain.

"Cold air and sub-freezing surface temperatures in Northeast Ohio will be slow to depart ahead of this precipitation. Therefore, once snow transitions to rain in the region, rain may freeze to surfaces for an hour or two on Sunday morning, including on area roadways, bridges, sidewalks, and driveways, and slick conditions are expected," the NWS said.

Temperatures are expected to push above freezing late Sunday morning.

The NWS urged drivers to slow down and use caution when traveling. Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads.

"If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury," the NWS said.
