CLEVELAND — Rollercoaster fans waiting for a chance to experience Cedar Point's brand-new Top Thrill 2 coaster will have to wait a little longer after a mechanical issue forced the park to close the ride for an "extended" time.
Cedar Point made the announcement on social media Sunday morning. The park said Top Thrill 2's manufacturer, Zamperla, is making a "mechanical modification" to the ride's vehicles.
"Once the modification is complete, Zamperla, the Cedar Point maintenance & operations teams and our third-party ride inspection partner will conduct a thorough review before approving both the modification and the reopening of the ride," the park stated.
Cedar Point said it "cannot confirm" when the ride will open back up but it will provide updates via its website.

"We know our guests are excited to experience this incredible roller coaster, and we share your disappointment that we are not able to operate it this weekend," Cedar Point's statement read. "We will do everything possible to reopen Top Thrill 2 as soon as we are confident we can deliver the ride experience that our guests deserve."
The setback comes just over a week after Top Thrill 2 made its much-hyped Cedar Point debut. The park recently opened for the 2024 season on Saturday, May 4.
Top Thrill 2 replaced the original Top Thrill Dragster rollercoaster, which has been closed since August 2021 after an incident in which a bracket came off the ride and struck a 44-year-old woman in the back of the head. She later filed a lawsuit in connection with the incident.
A 620-page report released in February 2022 by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which oversees the state’s amusement parks, declared there was “insufficient evidence to find the action or inactions of Cedar Point violated any of the laws.” You can review that report HERE.
“Cedar Point has cooperated fully with ODA throughout its investigation into the incident and we will closely review the substance of ODA’s report," park officials said in a statement after the ODA report was released.
Top Thrill 2 features three high-speed launches between two 420-foot tall towers, with top speeds reaching 120 mph.
