BRECKSVILLE, Ohio — Northeast Ohio is rich in talent when it comes to high school sports. There have been some programs that have achieved dynasty status over the years. For example, St. Edward's wrestling program. Regina girls basketball. Keystone softball. And more recently, Kirtland football.
Make sure you add another school and another sport to that prestigous list. And they might just have the most impressive resume of all: Brecksville-Broadview Heights gymnastics.
The Lady Bees have won 18 straight state championships and 21 total since 1994. "What makes it so special and unheard of is that every year it's a new team and a new group of girls," says head coach Maria Schneider.
For perspective, some members of this year's team that will go for the 19th straight title weren't even born when the streak began. "It's crazy. The streak is even older than me," says senior Jenny Bandsuh. "I don't even know most of the gymnasts who contributed to it. But it's so awesome to be a part of such an amazing legacy."
So what's the secret? Is it the coaching? Schneider just took over in 2019, inheriting a program her parents, Ron and Joan Ganim, guided for years. "I really think a lot of it is based off of the tradition," Schneider tells 3News. "I really think my parents, who were the coaches for many years, just instilled traditions of what this program represents."
