MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio — Maple Heights police were called to Southgate Shopping Center Monday night for a call of a dog that was shot.

Police say a man and his unleashed dog were at a bus stop on Southgate Park Blvd.

A car with a family and dog pulled up near a  pizza restaurant and got out of their car. The unleashed dog approached the family's dog.

The male that was in the car allegedly shot the unleashed dog and left with his family and dog.

Police rushed the injured dog to a local vet.

Police say it appeared that the dog suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The veterinarian's office would not release the condition of the dog but confirmed it was a patient there.

Police are reviewing surveillance video and are still investigating.
