Ash Wednesday.

CLEVELAND — Now that we’re all stuffed from the Fat Tuesday celebration, Ash Wednesday has arrived.

The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland has announced the distribution of ashes will take place with Mass set at the following times in the cathedral Wednesday:

  • 7:15 a.m.
  • 11 a.m.
  • 12 p.m.
  • 7 p.m.

For those not in the downtown Cleveland area, the Catholic Diocese has a list for Ash Wednesday so you can find the parish closest to you HERE.

“Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient tradition of penance and fasting,” the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland explained. “The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person, he speaks the words: ‘Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.’ Priests and deacons administer ashes during Mass and the faithful are invited to accept the ashes as a visible symbol of penance.”

It also marks the start of Lent, which is a season of prayer and repentance.

“It is also a time of preparation for the celebration of the paschal mystery – of Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection and ascension.”

In Hudson, the First Congregational Church on Aurora Street is offering drive-thru or walk-up ashes from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and again from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

This year Easter is Sunday, April 17.
