CLEVELAND — Beginning this month, all Heinen's grocery stores will carry only cage-free shell eggs.
Five years ago, the retailer announced their plans to only sell cage-free shell eggs by 2021 and, on Monday, they announced that they have met their goal.
Heinen's says this underscores its history of handling responsibly sourced food and its commitment to work to improve animal welfare.
All Heinen's branded eggs meet the United Egg Producer's guidelines of regulating temperatures, air quality, nesting space and the availability of fresh food and water. All of Heinen's eggs are from local farms and are processed within 24 hours of being laid.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, cage-free means birds are able to walk, lay their eggs in nests and spread their wings rather than living in cages where they have very little room.
Heinen's will have new packaging for all if its cage-free eggs, to help customers easily find their favorite variety.
