Got roots? The hair hacks you need to know at home

Salons have been closed for weeks, and our roots keep growing. But just remember, you don't need dye, to cover them up.

WESTLAKE, Ohio — It's been more than a month since we were asked to shelter safely at home -- and that means no more trips to the salon.

But, did you know there are plenty of creative ways to cover up those growing roots without using dye?

Nicole Wheeler, co-owner of Studio 6A in Westlake, says it's all about using what you've got. Below are her best at-home tips for covering up those roots:

Dry Shampoo

“First, would be using a dry shampoo, which is going to help soften your root and it's going to help that dark, kind of greasy feel, because that's the first to go when you’re a blonde. There is a darker tone for brunettes by Moroccan Oil, so this will have a darker shade to it versus the light powder."

Root Kit

“Color Wow has platinum. So what you can do with a brush, it gives you the illusion of a blonde highlight and you can brush it in, and it'll soften the root. Just like you would with a highlight. If you have dark hair and you're wanting to cover up your gray, they'll do the same process.”

Brown Eye Shadow

"If you don't have color while at home, you could use a brown shadow that you may have, and a brush, and kind of try to get the similar effect. Then, add a little hairspray just to kind of lock it in.

Different Hair Styles

So, kind of just hold the hair up with some pins, put some pins in, and then if you have roots, you just need to worry about the front and not the whole part line. If you have headbands, this is gonna like help get you through, too."

Distraction Makeup

Our lips, our brows, our cheeks. So just using makeup we have at home. I just take one thing and I just do like little quick color on my face. When your roots are dull, but your eyebrows are bright, your face is going to have that glow back to it.”

Embrace the Trend

The nice thing about what's happening in color trends right now, is everything's a modern color. So, it's a little bit brighter around the front, but that rooty look is popular. So it might be everyone's new style.”
