Tips for gathering safely with family and friends during the Holidays

Kristin Englund, MD, says the safest celebrations are with people you live with, or virtual.

CLEVELAND — The holidays have always been about family, friends and food. Unfortunately this year, the coronavirus pandemic has made us all change our plans.

However, if you are feeling lonely and isolated, the Cleveland Clinic has offered some helpful tips for you to see your loved ones in person safely.

Kristin Englund, MD, an infectious disease specialist with Cleveland Clinic, said the best way to avoid COVID-19 is to stay home, but if you need to visit for your mental and emotional health, be sure you’re taking proper precautions.

“Set up the rules ahead of time. Know how many people are coming,” she said. “Everybody agrees to masks and social distancing and agree that there’s not going to be the holiday hugs and kisses on the cheek that we normally want to do, but that’s okay this year, we need to do it to be safe.”  Dr. Englund said get-togethers should be 10 people or less, and fewer is better.

Another good tip is to stay six feet apart especially for people who live in different households.

Also, bring your own food. You never want to share serving utensils during this COVID-19 outbreak.
