Macy's to close store at Stow-Kent plaza

A clearance sale will begin this month and run for approximately 8-12 weeks.

STOW, Ohio — After a run of 55 years at the Stow-Kent Plaza, Macy's has confirmed plans to close the store.

A Macy's spokesperson says a clearance sale will begin this month and run for approximately 8-12 weeks.

"The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy’s is proud to have served the Stow community over the past 55 years, and we look forward to continuing to do so at nearby Macy’s stores including Macy’s Summit Mall, Macy’s Belden Village Mall, Macy’s Southpark Center, Macy’s University Heights Square and online at macys.com," Macy's told 3News in a statement.

The company says it has already notified employees about the decision. Non-seasonal employees who are unable to move to another Northeast Ohio store will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources.

The closing of the Macy's store in Stow is one of 15 planned closings by the company in 2020, including three in Ohio.  According to Business Insider, Macy's is also closing its Northgate Mall store in Cincinnati and at the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville.

Macy's closed two of its stores in 2016 in Northeast Ohio, shutting its locations at Chapel Hill Mall in Akron and Midway Mall in Elyria. In 2018, Macy's closed its location at Cincinnati's Fountain Place.
