CLEVELAND — It's been a busy week for the workers and volunteers of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank as they work to meet the needs of those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Last week, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a proclamation that activated approximately 300-400 personnel from the Ohio National Guard to support the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and the Ohio Association of Foodbanks at locations throughout the state.
With one problem solved, the organization was met with another obstacle Tuesday: Due to the increased need of Northeast Ohioians, local food banks saw an influx in traffic causing back ups in areas of the city.
The Greater Cleveland Food Bank Distributed shelf-stable boxes of food from 2 to 5 p.m.
Despite the delays, there was also plenty of optimism: The food bank served roughly 4,000 people during those three hours (about two thirds were first-time goers). Local resident Trina Taylor was also roadside trying to boost people's spirits.
"We are strong, we are together, and we are Cleveland," Taylor said.
Under Governor Mike DeWine’s “Stay At-Home Order” issued on Sunday, food banks are considered essential providers and are categorized under the Human Services Operations.
